St. Andrew's Cathedral

Yes, I am going to church, and for those who know me, understand that I am not a religious person; far from it, I consider myself to be an atheist. My thoughts on the subject have always been, you have religion; good for you, I do not; good for me.

However, while I am not religious, I do like architecture, so have visited many places of worship all over the planet, always treating them with respect.

Ever since my first visit to Singapore some 30+ years ago, I have been meaning to visit Saint Andrews Cathedral, having been told the interior is well worth the visit, but I just never managed to make it happen.

Today, in November 2024, that was going to change, so after fuelling up on breakfast, I headed for the City Hall MRT station, which has an exit right next to the Cathedral.

Exiting the MRT station into the hot and humid Singapore morning, I headed for the entrance to the Cathedral grounds to take a few external photos before heading inside.

Wandering around, I came across some landscape workers who gave me the "crazy tourist" look with a smile.

Anyhow, time to head inside.

First impression, it's light and bright with the stained glass windows at the far end glowing in the Singapore sunshine.

As for how it compares to some of the other churches I have visited over the years, well, it's impressive and far from the somewhat dark atmosphere of some I have visited, especially in the UK. And no, this is not a dig at the UK churches that tend to be much older and loaded with history, with some dating back centuries.

See the pipe organ above the entrance, which I would have liked to get a closer look at; however, after wandering around, I was unable to find any staff to talk to about that. Later this week, I will try again and update this page with hopefully good news.

Yes, it was a short visit, but still well worth the time. So yes, if you are visiting Singapore, pay the Cathedral a visit.
